Before the regular childcare hours begin, your child will be slowly introduced to the required amount of childcare hours, first in your presence and then without you. This may take a few weeks. This allows your child to get to know their caregivers/educational staff. You also have the opportunity to get to know this specialist better during this time together and to build up trust.

This is important so that you can leave your child in the care with a good feeling. With you as the first person of trust, the child can adjust to the new environment and new people with less stress. The educational staff also benefit from a good settling-in period. This is because they learn a lot about your child from you during this time together.

There are individual settling-in concepts in every daycare center. Talk to each other about this.

Settling in can take around four weeks. Talk to the facility or daycare center about the exact dates and procedures.

Early intervention is a service for children between the ages of zero and six with an imminent or manifest disability. Early intervention is holistic and family-oriented. It is individually tailored to your child in order to specifically support and promote your child's development. You will also receive accompanying advice and support.

Where can I get information?

The basic idea of integrative daycare in the form of integrative groups (crèche/kindergarten/after-school care) is the joint care and education of children with and without disabilities. In addition to this, inclusive groups are characterized by a smaller group size in order to do justice to all children in their development and to consider their individual needs.

The prerequisite for an integration place is an acknowledgement of costs for your child issued by the Integration Assistance Department of the Specialist Service for Social Affairs and Senior Citizens to cover the costs of joint care for children with and without disabilities (integration).

You can find integration groups for the crèche and kindergarten in the parents' portal (opens in a new tab) by filtering for integrative places.

An inclusive place is no more expensive for you than a regular place, so there are no extra costs for you.

A special education preschool is a specialized form of child care for children who need additional support in their development. It is designed for children who, for example, have been identified as having delays in their overall development, including language, motor skills, perception, social behavior, or emotional development.

In a special education kindergarten, specially trained professionals—such as special education teachers, early childhood educators, and often therapists (e.g., speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, or physical therapists)—work closely together. The goal is to support each child individually and help them further develop their strengths.

This support takes place in everyday life and through shared play—because play is the most important way children learn in early childhood. Through targeted activities, clear structures, and small groups, children receive the support they need to develop to the best of their ability.

A special education preschool also works closely with the children’s guardians. Regular meetings, counseling, and communication are part of this process to ensure that the support is well-tailored to the needs of the child and the family.

The overarching goal is to strengthen the children’s development, promote their independence, and provide them with a solid foundation for their future educational path.

A cost assessment is also required for these spots.

A speech therapy preschool is a specialized daycare facility for children who require more than just outpatient support for their speech development. Typically, this involves a combination of difficulties with speaking, comprehension, pronunciation, or vocabulary.

The basis for this is Lower Saxony’s “Agreement on Special Education Support and Medical Therapies in Speech Therapy Kindergartens.” The local agency responsible for integration assistance determines whether a child has such needs, in consultation with the Hearing, Speech, and Vision Advisory Service of the Lower Saxony State Office for Social Affairs, Youth, and Family.

Speech therapy preschools are staffed by specially trained professionals, often working alongside speech-language pathologists. Support takes place during daily activities and play and is individually tailored to each child.

Guardians are closely involved and regularly informed about their child’s progress. The goal is to strengthen the children’s language skills and provide them with a solid foundation for their future educational path.

In addition to speech therapy preschools, early intervention centers, and inclusive and special education preschools, there are other support services available for children with developmental delays, behavioral challenges, or (potential) disabilities. These include, for example, speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychomotor therapy, and specialized programs for children with hearing, vision, or developmental impairments. Social-pediatric centers (SPZ), educational and family counseling centers, and parent-child support groups can also provide support to families. The type of support that is appropriate depends on the child’s individual needs and is often determined in consultation with pediatricians or specialized agencies. The services are briefly explained below:

Speech therapy – Support for language, speech, voice, or swallowing disorders, as well as for general language acquisition

Occupational therapy – Support for the development of motor skills, perception, concentration, and daily living skills

Physical therapy – Support for motor development, balance, and muscle tone, as well as treatment of physical limitations

Psychomotor therapy – Play-based promotion of movement, perception, and social-emotional development

Autism-Specific Support – Special support services for children on the autism spectrum

Hearing and Vision Support – Early childhood intervention for children with hearing or vision impairments

Social-Pediatric Centers (SPZ) – These are specialized outpatient clinics at children’s hospitals. An interdisciplinary team of pediatricians, psychologists, and therapists conducts complex diagnostics and develops treatment plans for severe or unclear developmental abnormalities

Parenting and Family Counseling Centers – Counseling and support for parents regarding developmental or parenting issues

Music, equine, or animal-assisted therapy – Offered as complementary therapeutic options as needed

Parent-Child Support Groups or Special Education Playgroups – Joint support for children and counseling for parents

The All-Day Support Act (GaFöG) is a federal law that sets out the legal entitlement to all-day support for primary school children. It will apply from the 2026/2027 school year for all children starting first grade.

Primary school children are to receive all-day care and support. This should give everyone the same opportunities.

From the start of the 2026/2027 school year, all pupils in the first grade will initially be entitled to eight hours of support per day. This entitlement will be extended by one grade level in subsequent years. From the 2029/2030 school year, all primary school children will then be entitled to all-day support in elementary school.

In addition, there are various providers offering a wide range of services for families, children and young people.

These are listed below.
