In December 2013, the Salzgitter City Council decided that there should be a youth parliament in Salzgitter.

In organizational terms, the youth parliament is assigned to the Department of Municipal Child and Youth Development, Youth and Democracy Education Team, which includes the management and educational support. They support the youth parliament in the process and act as an interface between the administration and the youth parliament (and to a certain extent politics). As a result, they receive support from specialist expertise in the execution of their activities and learn specialist skills in order to be able to develop independent action on this basis.

The aim is to provide young people with a basis, encourage them and accompany them on their way. As a democratically legitimized member of the youth parliament, they are responsible for introducing and representing the voice of young people from Salzgitter in the preparation of resolutions, committees, working groups and other forms of cooperation with the administration, politicians, etc. In this way, part of the youth participation in Salzgitter is achieved.

In this way, part of the youth participation in Salzgitter is established in the form of a youth committee with an official, but non-partisan, political character, which promotes and enables the free formation of opinions and thus brings youth interests into local politics.

Young people in this body therefore take on social responsibility, both for their own generation and for the next generation. In addition to representing interests, it is also important to remain in contact with the people to be represented and to be able to exchange ideas with young people from committees in other municipalities in order to develop further. This includes municipal, state and national exchange partners as well as networking in the international field of youth work, administration and politics.
